misguided x: life in lyrics: fairytale

"Fairytale" - Sarah Bareilles

Cinderella's on her bedroom floor
She's got a
Crush on the guy at the liquor store
Cause Mr. Charming don't come home anymore
And she forgets why she came here
Sleeping Beauty's in a foul mood
For shame she says
None for you dear prince, I'm tired today
I'd rather sleep my whole life away than have you keep me from dreaming

[Chorus:]
'cause I don't care for your fairytales
You're so worried about the maiden though you know
She's only waiting on the next best thing

Snow White is doing dishes again cause
What else can you do
With seven itty-bitty men?
Sends them to bed and calls up a friend
Says will you meet me at midnight?
The tall blonde lets out a cry of despair says
Would have cut it myself if I knew men could climb hair
I'll have to find another tower somewhere and keep away from the windows

[Chorus]

Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom
Man made up a story said that I should believe him
Go and tell your white knight that he's handsome in hindsight
But I don't want the next best thing
So I sing and hold my head down and I break these walls round me
Can't take no more of your fairytale love

[Chorus]

I don't care
I don't care
Worry bout the maiden though you know
She's only waiting spent the whole life being graded on the sanctity of patience and a dumb
Appreciation
But the story needs some mending and a better happy ending
Cause I don't want the next best thing
No no I don't want the next best thing

Misguided 7: He's Just Not That Into You

This is such a fantastic movie. Mostly because it is, in fact, very much true. If a guy likes you he will find a reason to see you. If he doesn't, then honey, he won't be calling back. And if he really cares about you... he will get married. And it won't be out of obligation. You can tell if he actually considers this more than just a fling/substitution/pastime.

The saddest part of all is that I relate to Gigi, as though she was my long lost twin sister. Right now I'm single, with basically none past real relationships to speak of. Why? Because the guys that I like are never interested. Why are they not interested? Because I obsess and stalk and generally act like an idiot.

Here are five relationship rules that I have actually gained from my (and in part my friends) meager relationship experience and from countless chickflicks:

1. If he really wants to date you, he will actually say the words. Something along the lines of: "Want to go out some time?" And when you ask "Like a date?", the answer is firmly affirmative. Shyness and inability to commit to a simple affirmation of possible romantic encounter is not cute, but irritating and an immediate turn off.

2. Never plan your honeymoon vacation after saying a few words to him that go something like "Here's your stapler." Even if he's the super cute guy with a desk just two seats to the side of yours. It happens to me all the time. See cute/hot guy = mind goes into fantasy land where we ride off into the sunset. A rich fantasy love life leads to a poor real love life.

3. When after the very first date, when the date was not even really a date because no such confirmation was made, he asks "So, uh, what do you think of me?", either a) laugh at his face and tell him that he's being a dick, since you may not like him as much as he's expecting, or even not at all, but still be willing to work on it, or b) run away. This is just awkward. Not cute or romantic. Aaawwkwaaaard. But something like this happened to me and a friend, so it must be a popular pick-up line? Why god, why?

4. If he says he doesn't like you, then he doesn't like you. If he says he doesn't like you, but he actually does, then he's a messed up prick, and you have no business with him what-so-ever. Dating jerks may seem attractive (it most certainly does to me) but not practical. Jerks are simply undatable. Chick flick rule number one. Emotionally distant is workable, but outright mean? No badass sex appeal can make up for being treated like crap.

5. Self-deprecating humour is crap. It makes you feel awkward and sorry for the other person. Personally, I prefer some form of confidence - not 'egomania' but enough to allow for a good conversation. Show me how good you are. How you helped this old lady cross the street. How you studied like crazy for that bio test. How yesterday you learned how to play a guitar. Or something like that. Bitching and moaning and turning your other cheek when I'm trying to get a reaction, is just boring.

There are many other things that I could say on this subject. But I will only say this: Justin Long (the Mac guy) is my new crush. Scarlett Johansson is my old renewed crush. Damn you "He's Just Not That Into You". Making me question my sexuality.

Anyways, click 'here' to go to the official movie website. And please, please, please check out the "Top Ten Chick Flick Cliches Not Found in the Movie". It's madly hilarious.

love,
Mary

Misguided 6: 18: Miracle or Disaster?

Today, on June 10th, I turn 18.
I don't like it, much. Birthdays always seem ominous.
I did however get some "Vera Wang: Princess" for the occasion. Telling my parents that presents are /really/ unnecessary for my birthday (I don't like to be reminded) is truly useless. I was hoping that fixing my laptop (yay, it's fixed!) would be enough, but noooo. They just have to throw perfume at me.

Watched "Miss Potter" , with Renee Zellwager and Ewan McGregor, in French. I love both of them to bits. The movie was very pretty and thoughtful, and I teared up in the end. Surprisingly, I did okay with the French.

My fashion portfolio-wise, not much is happening. I'm done my self portrait (/kind of/) and currently it's sitting in the display case at school, staring down at people. It's fantastic.

I have to remind myself that the orientation is happening at TFI pretty soon now. Fingers crossed this won't be a waste of time/ I won't /completely/ embarass myself.

Will blog later with some fashion headlines?

love,
Mary

Misguided 5: Favourite New Artist and Hey! The Human Society As We Know It Will Collapse By 2100

I have, in fact, decided to go with the panda layout. Because pandas are the best animals ever AND this layout is  cute, but not overly pretentious. Yay pandas!

I'll be posting select entries to my facebook now, simply due to the fact that there are so many absolutely amazing things that I do, and my friends ABSOLUTELY need to know about them. (Douchebag scale: "96.3% Douchebag").

None of the following things have anything to do with fashion, but they are very much arts and culture. This is what I loved in movies, literature, art and TV this week.

I watched a 'documentary' Tuesday on ABC called "Earth: 2100".

What will our planet, our society, be like on the dawn of the next century? In this stunning, in my opinion, movie feature, scientists, sociologists, and intellectuals create a startling projection of our future. Dramatic population growth, natural phenomena, human greed, will all essentially come together to bring the downfall of our age, similar to that of the Maya or the Roman empires. This movie was fantastic - I loved the art (although I'm yet to find who the artist was), and despite a certain 'green propaganda' that this feature might have had, I agree with many of the points that it made. I don't like spoiling movies so I won't give away the plot. However, "Earth:2100" is definitely worth watching whether you agree or disagree with it.

Click here to go the ABC Earth:2100 website.

Apparently A. S. Byatt is actually a rather famous British author. When I took out her novel "Babel Tower", I had no idea. I think it's needless to say that I absolutely adored this book.

Read this book. Read it, read it, read it. The plot revolves around Fredericka, a spirited intellectual who finds herself trapped in a passionate but loveless marriage. Her personal and professional trials, coincide with some of the more depraved and violent crimes in the 60s London, creating a realistic atmosphere of desperation, violence, and love. This absolutely fantastic novel is exceptionally delicate, exciting, and most of all, intellectual. It discusses libertarianism versus autocracy in primary school education methods, eroticism, life, cruelty, the struggle of women to become something more.

I believe, I'll be perusing for more A. S. Byatt novels this summer. Hopefully you'll do the same. Click here to go to A. S. Byatt's official website.

I accidentally stumbled upon this artist in the dentist's office this week, while flipping through a glossy and waiting for anesthesia to freeze the left side of my face. Not the most romantic situation, but after reading the article about Lori Dell and her work, I knew I was in love with this woman's art.  The print below is called "Shanghai II".

I am particularly amazed by her architectural paintings and her prints.
Click here to go to her official website and check out her work.

Last but not least.... it's "So You Think You Can Dance"! This show is way up there in my top 3 of "Greatest Shows Ever Made." My early favourite this season is Tony. There are no great pictures of him yet, since the seaons's just starting. I'm definitely going to be stalking this show this summer.

Click here to go to the official "So You Think You Can Dance" website.

This is it for now, because I'm late for school. (Need to finish my art summative - self portrait. Currently it looks like an acid trip.)

Misguided 4: The Blues

The show and the mess that came with it are over and done with, and I'm a little sad. Sorry about the lack of blogging in the last few days. I've been sleeping and... yes, sleeping. Major energy drain by the end of friday.

I am freezing my butt off surfing the net in the basement. Can't wait to get my laptop fixed and move the action to my room. Maybe I'll even add some apps to the blog.

Anyways, the show! It went well. Surprisingly or not, depends. The set team was intense (and one set guy was cute). They built a swing and two screens (), moved stuff around, and were overall fantastic. The models behaved and were gorgeous and well-coordinated. They also listened. It was great. I asked the aesthetics team to do a certain design scheme and it worked out fabulous. The designing team was a bit weak this year - there were a couple of outstanding individuals, but otherwise, pfft. Something to keep in mind for the next MOD year. The MOD president (a friend of mine) and the next year's Student Council president did a modelling stint and the crowd was happy.   They were also happy about the guy models...

My favourite part was the umbrella walk. It was so adorable, I'm speechless. Overall, all of us did a great job I think. The show wasn't dirty (as it had a tendency to be in years past), but clean and stylish, with many awesome performances by our school's dancers, musicians, singers. Much awesome.

AC was my 'Creative Director Assitant' this year. I hope she becomes the president for the 2009/2010 MOD, because she is absolutely fantastic, and dedicated and many types of god. Hopefully I'll maintain my position, since I really do love it.

IN OTHER NEWS!
- My 'Passion for Fashion' workshop at the Toronto Fashion Incubator is on June 16th. Yay! I'm totally excited!
- One week until the end of school year! (absolute happiness)
- Got a 'decent short + decent colour' haircut this Saturday. No boy cuts or tomato reds for prom. It's all about the classical.
- Prom on June 24th!! Still need to get my ticket.
- Currently considering what to do for summer. Want to apply for an internship at the Worn Magazine, since they're offering right now. The only problem is that I have only recently realized that they exist, and have never previously read any of their magazines. A little problematic, yeah.
- I have a problem with the very white font in my current layout. Will be shopping for a new one, ASAP.

xoxo
Mary
